Nuri Yeremeyevich Kvarchia is justifiably considered one of the main characters of the book “Famous People of the Caucasus” (Nalchik, 2013). “Abkhazia should be proud of the fact that there are people like Nuri Kvarchia, who cares about the culture of his people and who is serving fanatical and selflessly to the benefit of the culture for many, many years”, – in these words vice president of the World Artistic Committee A. A. Betuganov described Nuri Kvarchia.
Nuri Kvarchia’s biography, his multifaceted and fruitful activity demonstrated the truth of these words. After graduating with honors from Tbilisi State Institute named after Sh. Rustaveli in 1975 Kvarchia entered the Abkhazian State Drama Theatre named after S.Chanba as an actor and subsequently created a gallery of vivid stage images. He combined acting career with the work as a director of Tkuarchal Folk Theater. In 1986 he was appointed to the post of the cultural and educational director of the Scientific and Methodological Center of Folk Art of the Ministry of Culture of the Abkhaz ASSR. This position gave him an opportunity to reveal his organizational skills and bright multi-faceted manager talent: he carried out extensive work on the collection of folklore material; thanks to him an ethnographic ensemble of Abkhaz centenarians “Nartaa” resumed its performances; he organized many national competitions, festivals of folk groups of Abkhazia, parades of family ensembles, dance teams, folk theaters, art exhibitions and exhibitions folk artists.
In 1989, Nuri Yeremeyevich visited the People’s Republic of China and signed a protocol of cooperation intent. Later, he negotiated with some partners about guest performance of ensemble “Nartaa” in the United States … But political events of 1989 prevented the implementation of his ambitious plans.
In the first few days of peace after the war in Abkhazia, N.Y.Kvarchia has not yet recovered from his wounds but in spite of that he undertook the restoration of his former place of work and opened a Republican Center of Folk Art of Abkhazia. He overcame all difficulties and with renewed vigor, he launched shows, contests, festivals…
N.Y. Kvarchia made a huge contribution in establishing business contacts with the creative teams of the fraternal republics of the North Caucasus and Russia. He also contributed in the promotion of culture and art of Abkhazia and the rapprochement of cultures of different nations. In this regard, cooperation with the Republican center of folk art and many performers and groups of Karachay–Cherkessia was really fruitful. I remember the days of the 2nd festival of Abkhaz-Abaza Culture, which took place in 2009: at the first stage, in June in Karachay-Cherkessia’s village Staro-Kuvinsk and Cherkessk were held concerts featuring artists from Abazashta and Abkhazia; the second phase took place in Abkhazia in September – “Abazgs” gave concerts in the cities of Gagra and Sukhum, involving VIA “Apsny – 67″, singer and composer Zaur Zukhba and rising stars of Abkhazia.
During those festival days I first met Nuri Yeremeyevich and admired his enthusiasm and scale of creative initiative. He established close cooperation with the Karachay-Cherkess Republican Center of Folk Art: representatives of Abkhazia always participate in events organized by the Ministry of Culture of KCR. Our meetings a few times were held in Dombay, during the All-Russian festival of Bard Song “Mountain Peaks”. And in May of last year, during the festival of art song in Nevinnomyssk, my phone rang. “Abkhazia invites you to the festival of bard song “I’m singing for you, Abkhazia!”- These surprising words belonged to Nuri Kvarchia, who had clear voice of an actor.
Festival in June 2014 forever left the most vivid impressions in my memory. Then, in a brief conversation, I learned a lot about the work of the Republican center of folk art, the many creative projects that have become traditional: Pop Song Contest “Young Voices”, Children and Youth Dance Festival “Adzyh”, Festival for Folk Instruments Orchestras “Aphiartsa” and many others.
Kvarchia Nuri and his young actors always came back home with a prize-winning places and awards from each parade, competition or festival they participated in. Not sparing himself, Nuri Kvarchia today continues to share his experience, knowledge, strength and energy for the benefit of Culture of Abkhazia.
War of 1992-1993 in Abkhazia left deep wounds on the body and the soul of Nuri Yeremeyevich. He was awarded the Order of Leon for bravery and courage during the war. Also he has a lot of awards and titles for his tireless work in peacetime: Officer of the Gold Order with a honorary title “Knight of Culture” awarded by the World Art Committee and the World Assembly of Public Recognition, the gold medal “Laureate of Art Committee of Peoples of Russia”, diplomas of first degree awarded by the Fund of artist Shemyakin (St. Petersburg), NGO “Adygea Hasa” (Lazarevsk) and Diploma of the Moscow Government.
